Holiday Busyness

In the midst of holiday activities, I hurriedly gave students their assignment at the end of the day. In case they missed it, they were to bring home their hard cover math book and complete numbers 1 and 2 from page 126. They also have a writing activity in which they use all their spelling words in a paragraph.  For some children, this may be too much, so please feel free to modify! For example, tell them to use only 5 words in the paragraph and/or complete one math problem. Have a great night!
P.S. If your student forgot their book you can pull it up on the internet by clicking the link to the right Math in Focus

I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend, busily preparing for Christmas together as a family!  Here are a couple of worksheets for this week as well as the Homework list. The whole 3rd grade will work together during Language Arts. We'll be practicing Christmas spelling words and preparing choral Christmas readings that we will perform for other classes.  We are also planning on Christmas caroling in the school building to share the joy of the season.  Looking forward to seeing you all on Thursday evening at the school Christmas concert, which begins at 7pm!

Chapter 4 Math Test Tomorrow

We are having the Chapter 4 Math Test tomorrow.   Dismissal today was a little rushed so some of your students may have forgotten to bring home their math books. You can access the math book online. Just click on the link located on the right hand side of my blog.  There you will also find tonight's homework page, Chapter Review Test, page 116.

Thanks to all our parent helpers for accompanying us on the field trip today. The play was entertaining and engaging for all!

Wednesday's Homework

Today's homework is somewhat of a reflection/evaluation worksheet based on the science show students participated in today.  In order for me to get a clear view of their background knowledge on the concepts presented, please do not assist your child with the paper.  Thank You!

Mrs. Ferguson's Reading Group- Spelling Update

Today your students will come home with a spelling activity sheet that can be used throughout the rest of the year.  There are several fun activities to choose from.  They choose one/night (Mon.-Thurs.) to complete and turn in the next day.  They must choose a different activity each night during a given week, but may repeat activities when given a new word list the following week.  There are also several activities you can print off of Spellingcity.com that they can turn in as homework. Practicing nightly will help them solidify their learning of new and more challenging spelling patterns.  Thanks for your support!!!

Service Projects

This year we will be participating in the SwitchWitch - Operation Gratitude program. Next week we are collecting Halloween candy to be donated to US troops via care packages. Students can donate candy that they collected while trick-or-treating or extra candy that was purchased to give to trick-or-treaters. Each homeroom will have a friendly competition to see who can donate the most Halloween candy, with the top homeroom receiving an extra PE class. More exercise and less candy is a great way to stay healthy.

Also, we are collecting cardboard tubes (any size), for another service project. Please send in these items next week.  Thanks for your help!

The Week Ahead

The last week of October brings us also to the last few days of IOWA testing.  Students have been focused and working hard.  To take the edge off, students had access to the chromebooks and practiced math concepts on Sumdog.  We should be wrapping up the testing by Tuesday or Wednesday morning.

New spelling words are up on Spellingcity.com for my reading group. Having some trouble linking the homework sheet. Will re-visit tomorrow!

Good Monday!

Students did a great job on their first day of testing.  They completed the Reading section of the IOWA's and demonstrated sustained focus throughout. Although they weren't particularly excited about testing, they were very excited not to be assigned homework from Mrs. Ferguson! (Reading nightly is still expected.)

Students also enjoyed a Kona Ice treat at the end of the day. Thanks PTC!!!

IOWA Testing and Homework

Over the next 2 weeks most of the students at OLF will be taking the IOWA Basic Skills Test.  Please make sure your student has a healthy and complete breakfast to start each day and gets sufficient rest. These simple steps make a big difference in how students approach and perform on their tests.

If your student has been attending OLF since Kindergarten, this is their first experience with the IOWA's.  Assure your child there is no need to worry.  Tell them that although this does not affect their grade directly, they should do their best.  I will not be assigning homework for the duration of the testing.  I would rather the students be well rested and stress-free each morning.  Please email me if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you!!!

New News!

Students are very excited for the Fun Run and Pig Race tomorrow. I'll be sure to post pictures of the celebration. Go Bacon Bits!!!

Along with using our agendas nightly, I've decided to send home a weekly homework sheet so students will have extra support for staying organized.  Keeping up with the agenda has been somewhat of a challenge and a bit overwhelming with all the other new routines students are learning.

Agenda Club will be starting up next week.  This is an after school club that meets on Mon., Tues., and Thurs., where students can opt to stay an extra 5-10 minutes and meet with one of the 3-4-5 teachers. We will check and sign their agendas, as well as make sure they have the materials needed to complete assigned work.  Incentives can be earned for coming on a regular basis.  Agenda Club will meet in my room for the first week- Oct. 5, 6, 8.

Sumdog News!

Hi Parents!  I'm thrilled to tell you students are now logged on to Sumdog thanks to Ms. Van Tassel!
Each child received log-in information and glued it in their agendas.  We've been working on  Chapter 1 in our math books, Counting to 10,000. We'll be comparing numbers, working on place value and learning to count on by ones, tens, hundreds and thousands.  Check out place value games on the Sumdog website!

Don't forget our Mass is this Sunday at 10:30am.  Students are to wear their uniforms and arrive in the parish center at 10:10. We will sit together as a class in the front left pews as you face the altar. We practiced today in church. Everyone did a fabulous job!

Many apologies!!! We were working so hard I forgot to send home the Family Packets today. I'll be sure to have the students put them in their backpacks first thing in the morning.

We'd like to welcome Jay to our class. Today was his first day and the children enjoyed showing him the ropes and making a new friend.

Computer Time Today!

Good Morning! Thanks so much for coming out to 'Curriculum Night'. It was great getting to meet you all.  I'm sure your children will be excited to read the notes you left for them.

Today we will use the Macbook computers in our classroom. Students will go on Khanacademy.org., a terrific math website where they can practice all different skills.  They will be given an Id and Password. I'll have them write this down in their agendas so they can have access at home.  Have a great day!

Today's homework:
*Read 20 minutes
*Decorate writing notebook
* Think about and  write down in your writing notebook, 2 'small moments'
( A 'small moment' is when students think of a person who matters to them.  Then they list clear, small moments they remember with him or her; for ex. a time when you played  baseball and caught a pop fly)

Tuesday, September 8- Homework

Tonight's homework is a math sheet reviewing skills previously learned.  Also, students are to study their spelling words for a test on Friday. We are learning how to spell each other's first names. Since our class is so large, I split the list in half. The first half is listed here. The rest of the names will be tested next Friday. Have a great night!

Spelling Study Tip: Salt/Sand/Flour Tray - spell words using finger or paintbrush (great sensory experience too). Put colored construction paper under the salt, sand or flour to make the letters really pop.

The Adventure Begins!

Welcome to Mrs. Ferguson's 3rd Grade Blog where events, news, weekly homework and other classroom business will be discussed!

Third graders truly had 'All Hands On Deck' (our school theme this year)  the first two days of school! We spent time getting organized, going over procedures and developing classroom rules together.  Students will continue getting used to routines over the next couple of weeks as well as be assessed for appropriate leveling and instruction.

I hope to see you all at curriculum night this week!
