Classroom News

Hi Everyone,

So sorry for sending out Pike Place permission forms last minute!
Please check with your child that they have the signed paper in their backpack tomorrow morning.

Any child who has a birthday during the summer months may bring in a treat for the class to share before the last day of school. I will be giving out birthday bags to those students. Please send an email to let me know your plans.  Thank you!

Final Weeks of School

Welcome back after a long weekend. Hopefully you all had a relaxing weekend full of family time, cook-outs and laughter!

As we approach our final weeks of school, end of the year assessments will be given in math, reading and writing.  These are not assessments students need to study for.  Most are individual, one-on-one, measures of year-long, third grade learning.

Mrs. Ferguson's reading group will have their final spelling words to study this week. We will be doing a 2-part, end-of-the-year test next week.

There will be a Math test on Chapter 19, Area and Perimeter, this Thursday. Students will need to study for this test and should bring their books home for extra study support. I will also send a practice test home on Wednesday (which will not need to be returned).

On Wednesday our class will travel to Pike Place Market from 9:15- 12:30.  This is an extension of our Social Studies curriculum on the history of Seattle and its varied cultures that make up our great community.

Attached is the homework.
Have a great week!

Week of May 23rd

This week we're finishing up Chapter 19 in math, Perimeter and Area.  Students will take their test June 2nd.  This Thursday is Red Nose Day. Students can wear red or a 'Shirt of Hurt' (check the school website for official information).

In Science we are studying structures of life. Last week students  built their own terrariums using the plastic water bottles they brought in.  Today we observed and noted changes.  Students were able to experience first-hand, the water cycle process.

The Pike Place Market field trip is scheduled for June 1 during morning hours. I will be finalizing the list of drivers/students. Please email me with any changes of chaperoning. Have a good week.

Hi Parents,
The following is an email that Derek Mitchell will be forwarding to you.

Regarding the Pike Place Market field trip, it is scheduled for June 1st. We'll be leaving at about 9:15 and returning in time for lunch. Any parent that wants to attend is welcome to so, I'm planning on all the parents who returned the field trip form a few weeks ago, to chaperone.  If you did not return a form and would like to attend just send me an email so I can plan cars accordingly.

The author research and compare/contrast reports are on hold until further notice. We've been completing so many projects that we have a little too much on our plates. I'll send a note home next week with more updates on this subject.
Thanks so much for all your support!

Happy Mother's Day

I hope all our 3rd grade moms had a relaxing day enjoying their families! I had a wonderful weekend with my daughter in Minneapolis!

This week we have a visit from our Pike Place Market tour guide to help us prepare for our field trip in June.   Wednesday is jam packed-  3rd grade Mass at 9am and the Symphony at 12:15.  We'll be leaving the building around 11:15 and returning by 2pm.  Please have your student bring a lunch that day, as we will have to eat before we leave.

Thanks for sending in water bottles last week. We have extra if your student forgot theirs.  We'll be planting terrariums to coincide with our science unit on Life Structures.

My reading group is beginning a new novel study this week, Maniac Mageeby Jerry Spinnelli.

In writing we're working on the proper form of a friendly letter.  Since our whole class just finished up Glory Be, everyone is drafting a letter to the author, Augusta Scattergood.

Last week, on Thursday, we celebrated completion of  Glory Be with a '60's party.  Students ate a Pop-Tart (first produced in 1964), listened to music by the Beatles and Elvis, and danced the Hully Gully and the Peppermint Twist.  We also watched a presentation of popular trends during the 60's and played a memory game afterwards.  It was an enjoyable time!

Math Club will be held on Thursday (no class on Wednesday) at 7:45am.  A Sumdog challenge of multiplication and division facts has been set up.  Please have your student arrive on time. I will be at the front door by 7:40am.

Attached is the homework lists for the week.
